Last week at ECL 9 Kain Mu'Nail took on a tough opponent in Thorstein Matsburg, a guy who had called the new face out after his apparently "dirty" victory over Jake Tylor. The fight ended with Matsburg knocked out on the mat laying in his own blood with Kain's hand raised in victory. After the fight the typically quite and very respectful Kain decided to talk to the press about the fight.
"I take it personally when someone calls me out. I'm not a willingly dirty fighter but hey this is MMA where anything and everything happens. Add to that, that I was trained for six years in Krav Maga, the definition of desperation fighting. When Thorstein called me out I thought ok I'll fight this guy because I like people who stand up for what they believe and he was pretty adament about it. I also like thicking the plot, you know, bringing some character to the bouts. Matsburg came out of the gate very strong and my strategy through the first round was just to counter punch mostly. Right before the round ended i caught him good a couple times and split him open good. After that I knew I had the upper hand so I kept things calm and threw everything I had in the second because I knew he was nearly gassed out. The one thing that upset me about this fight was that he tried to take me down...going in I assumed it would be a strict standup war considering the shit he was talking. I shrugged that off and finished him there in the end. All-in-all I think it was a good fight for me and for Matsburg in a way. He showed that he can be a crowd pleaser and that he has a friggen amazing heart, he wouldn't stop coming for more until his light went out. Thos are the types of guys you love to train with and have in your camp. I have nothing really bad to say about the guy, I think he just needs to work on his technical skills a little and come back stronger. Give him a couple fights and he'll be a contender in the ECL soon enough. I used to be a lot like him back in the SoHK but that was eons ago it seems, I feel like a far more mature fighter."
This week Kain has the opportunity to become the ECL's lightweight champion which is pretty exciting for the youngster who only has two fights in the ECL. In his only guaranteed bout on the card for ECL 10, Kain will fight the lightweight #1 contender in Mark Neil (3-3-0) who is coming off a big win. If Kain is successful against Neil he'll go on to fight lightweight champion Akira Tetsou (4-1-0) only a few hours later.
"I'm glad I am getting all these fights thats for sure. This is my third fight in as many weeks and I'm not going to complain about that. Neil is a good fighter but has had an up and down career so far in the ECL. I expect him to bring it throughout the bout and I'm looking forward to a war. Should I get past Neil then I have to take on Tetsou only 90 minutes later. I've fought two K-1 GP's and faught into the latter rounds so I'm used to and conditioned well enough to do it but I honestly don't know a lot about our champion. I'm going to head home this week and watch a lot of tape and prepare rigorously for these two guys and hopefully when the dust settles I'll have that belt around my waist but who knows."
