Well im personaly not one of those ppl on the Fedor bandwagon just look at your member title and you'll see i actually hate fedor, i say GSP is the best fighter in the world and best athlete he was recently voted canadian athlete of the year. He has the best takedown defense ever, his wrestling is sick and so is his stand up, same with his BJJ he is just a perfect well rounded and athletic fighter.

Fedor has to be considered the best currently. His stand up is powerful and his ground game is perfect. GSP is right up there along with BJ for being well rounded but Fedor is the best. I'm not a nuthugger or anything and I actually hope Andrei beats him but his skills are undisputable. The guys focus is also incredible. On the plus side GSP will be here long after Fedor retires and he keeps getting better.

Everyone seems to have this idea that Fedor's striking is infallible. I think he's the best HW in the world right now, but as far as best fighter in the world, P4P-wise... I don't think so.
His striking isn't infallible. It's not even elite... it's just absurdly unorthodox. He comes out with his hands wide and low (generally) and throws from his hips while counter-rotating. It's WEIRD, but it isn't unbeatable. Fedor's aura of invincibility is what keeps opponents from concentrating solely on his striking. His submissions alone are enough to completely forget that he doesn't punch and kick like a normal fighter. His opponents are just so worried about what happens when he catches hold of them that the forefront of their mind is usually keeping distance.
I think if this ends up in a stand-up war (Arlovski/Fedor) that Andrei not only has a fighting chance, but has the advantage. Should it go anywhere other then the feet (even in a close clinch) that's where Andrei is going to start struggling.
My money for Best Fighter in the World right now... I'm not gonna go cliche and say Anderson Silva (though he is a glaring example) but I'll jump on the GSP bandwagon. GSP is the best fighter in the world right now, proven through level of competition, number of bouts in 2008 and willingness to fight anywhere.

I'd say he's a better example than GSP now. GSP may be the future greatsest but he still has to keep growing. As for your reasoning about Fedors striking...I agree that Andrei is a better striker and could do some damage there, but in determining the best P4P fighter you need to consider the whole package. Fedor's striking is precise, his ground game is supurb his cardio is great and as I said before his composure is unbelievable. He isn't the only fighter to have these attributes but he is the most successful. Anderson is just about there. GSP will be. BJ is another one that can be there. He'll have to beat GSP though. BJ has always sucked at WW (except for when he beat Hughes) Anyway, people will always play their favorites. None of these guys are my favs but I still think Fedor is in a class by himself. He'll have to lose convincingly to make me think otherwise.

Colm, listen here, im a bigger GSP fan then i am a Fedor fan or anderson fan, but you cant doubt the skills they possess and acheivements they have earned. GSP is what, 26? He has many years still left and no doubt if he keeps up his current tear then he will be known as the best soon enough. That being said, at this very moment in time you can not consider him the best in the world, anyone with extensive mma knowledge will tell you that fedor is the pound for pound best fighter. Anderson Silva closely follows him, then GSP. Also the "canadian athlete of the year" award means nothing because it was given out by sportsnet, who are trying to get on the mma bandwagon before other major broadcasters. TSN is the biggest network in ontario, so until they name him canadian athlete of the year, dont use that as a point to help him.

lol who else would they pick besides GSP for canadian athlete of the year? Their choices are some hockey player or GSP. Or some random person from the olympics. Not really a tough choice.

Jarome Iginla, Jason Morneau, and some Parapylegic dude arent stiff competition. I know what your trying to say with the whole not a prestige award thing, but he still only won due to the other choices not having as big a fan base. Throw Crosby in and then see if the votes as big a landslide.
